POSITION: Spill Response Technician, Solid Waste

SEASON: Austral Summer (Oct 2023 - Feb 2024)

LOCATION: McMurdo Station, Antarctica

SECTOR/DEPT: Six Mile, LLC Antarctica

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Act as Spill Lead when on call, this includes:

Responding to environmental spills at all local locations

Coordinating spill site remediation activities with all involved parties

Be able to supply manual labor (shoveling) for several hours if needed.

Research and write the environmental spill report for submittal to National Science Foundation

Operate IT-28 and 936 front end loaders and M4K forklift daily

Daily use of pallet jack, banding equipment, power tools, hand tools, shovels, and other tools

Collect full waste bins and transport to processing building

Package all waste properly to meet regulations and/or follow best practices

Load shipping containers with packaged waste to meet regulations and/or follow best practices

Operate industrial wood grinder, metal baler, other industrial balers as needed

Maintain clean and orderly work spaces in processing facility and in outdoor work areas

Track all labor, work orders, and other data accurately

Participate in safety meetings

Update JHAs as needed

Assist Haz Waste as needed

Read and follow SOPs and safety procedures for all activities

Assist in scale house operations during vessel evolution; requires working 12-hour shifts, with possibility of night shift

Assist in vessel spill booming operations as needed

Position requires constant physical activity, including bending, consistently lifting and carrying 50 - 70 lbs, reaching and gripping.

Agrees with and adheres to the Standard Operating Procedures and tasking responsibilities of the Waste department.

Able to work in a team unit composed of diverse personalities.

Displays self-motivation in physically challenging and atypical work environment; position is comprised of approximately 70% outdoor tasking

Able to maintain flexibility and positive attitude in a dynamic, fast-paced work setting

Performs duties in support of Operations Division metrics (as provided by supervisor)

Supports the achievement of ASC metrics, whether metrics are directly or indirectly, effected by this position's work activities

Complies with all ASC Environmental Health & Safety, and Quality Assurance, requirements and goals. Provides documentation to these divisions as necessary to ensure adequate and legal documentation

Works to achieve ASC goals and contractual commitments

Responsible for maintaining a safe workplace and ensuring that safety is the highest priority in the workplace

Perform other duties as required

Reports to Solid Waste Supervisor

REQUIREMENTS:

High school diploma

Experience living on remote job site

Equipment operating experience

Familiarity with power tools and machinery

Able to lift and carry 50 lbs consistently

Ability to pass background check and drug screening

Valid Driver's License and Passport

Physically able to be active for 9 hours daily

Must be able to lift the safety regulation maximum and perform functions requiring repetitive motion required

Must pass physical qualification assessment

Able to deploy to Antarctica for length of contract

Able to attend Oil Spill Training in Denver, July 2019

PREFERRED

1 year of High School Chemistry or equivalent

Previous spill response experience

OSHA HazWOPER 40-Hour, current

EDUCATION: High School dimploma

CERTIFICATIONS AND/OR LICENSING REQUIREMENTS: Valid Driver's License and passport valid for six months after end of contract.

OTHER: US citizenship or permanent residency required.

A prerequisite of employment for this position is to successfully gain a favorable Tier 1 - Elevated Background Investigation (EBI) result prior to deployment. Candidates hired for this position will be required to complete; online forms, written forms, fingerprint cards and provide additional details and information as requested by NSF Personnel Security.
